Rigoberta Menchú

Rigoberta Menchú, born on January ninth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a prominent K'iche' Guatemalan human rights activist, feminist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Throughout her life, she has been a tireless advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples in Guatemala, particularly during and after the tumultuous Guatemalan Civil War, which lasted from nineteen sixty to nineteen ninety-six.

In recognition of her unwavering commitment to social justice, Menchú was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in nineteen ninety-two. Her influence extended beyond national borders when she was appointed as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in nineteen ninety-six. Additionally, she received the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award in nineteen ninety-eight, further solidifying her status as a leading voice for Indigenous rights on the global stage.

Menchú is also known for her literary contributions, including the testimonial biography 'I, Rigoberta Menchú,' published in nineteen eighty-three, and her autobiographical work 'Crossing Borders' released in nineteen ninety-eight. In a groundbreaking move for her country, she founded Winaq, Guatemala's first Indigenous political party, and ran as its presidential candidate in the elections of two thousand seven and two thousand eleven.
