Rita Verdonk, born on October eighteenth, nineteen fifty-five, is a prominent Dutch politician, columnist, and writer. She began her academic journey at a Gymnasium in Utrecht, where she studied from June nineteen sixty-eight until June nineteen seventy-four. Verdonk then pursued higher education at Radboud University Nijmegen, initially majoring in Law before switching to Criminology. She earned her Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree in July nineteen seventy-nine and later completed her Master of Criminal Justice degree in July nineteen eighty-three.
Her professional career commenced as a civil servant for the Ministry of Justice, where she worked from September nineteen eighty-three until October nineteen ninety-six. Following this, she served as the director of the department of State Security at the Domestic Security Service (BVD) until November nineteen ninety-nine. Verdonk transitioned to the private sector, working as a management consultant for KPMG and Atos from November nineteen ninety-nine until May two thousand three.
In May two thousand three, Verdonk was appointed Minister for Integration and Asylum Affairs in the Cabinet Balkenende II. Her political journey saw her contend for leadership of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in May two thousand six, although she lost to Mark Rutte. The Verdonk-Ayaan Hirsi Ali controversy led to the fall of the Cabinet Balkenende II, but she continued her role in a caretaker capacity until the formation of the Cabinet Balkenende III.
After being elected to the House of Representatives in November two thousand six, Verdonk faced challenges within her party, leading to her expulsion from the VVD parliamentary group in September two thousand seven. Subsequently, she founded her own political party, Proud of the Netherlands, in October two thousand seven. Despite her efforts as the lead candidate in the two thousand ten general election, the party did not secure any seats, and she concluded her parliamentary term in June two thousand ten.
Post-politics, Verdonk has remained active in both the private and public sectors, taking on various roles as a corporate and nonprofit director, as well as a political and management consultant.
