Robert Lewis Thomson, known affectionately as "Topper," was born on August 16, 1963. A Canadian by birth, he carved out a notable career in professional baseball, initially as a player in the Detroit Tigers organization from nineteen eighty-five to nineteen eighty-eight, where he showcased his skills as both a catcher and third baseman.

After transitioning from player to manager, Thomson took the helm of the Class A Oneonta Yankees for a year. His journey continued within the New York Yankees organization, where he held various front office roles. His coaching career flourished as he served as the Yankees’ bench coach in two thousand eight, followed by a stint as the third base coach from two thousand nine to two thousand fourteen, and then returning as bench coach from two thousand fifteen to two thousand seventeen.

In two thousand eighteen, Thomson joined the Philadelphia Phillies as their bench coach. His leadership was put to the test when he was named interim manager on June third, two thousand twenty-two, after the dismissal of Joe Girardi. Under his guidance, the Phillies made their first postseason appearance since two thousand eleven, leading to his appointment as the full-time manager on October tenth, two thousand twenty-two. That same year, he achieved the remarkable feat of leading the team to their first National League pennant since two thousand nine.
