Robert Bortuzzo, born on March 18, 1989, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known for his role as a defenceman. Currently an unrestricted free agent, he most recently played for the Utah Hockey Club in the National Hockey League (NHL). Bortuzzo's journey in hockey began in his youth, where he showcased his talent with the Fort William North Stars, leading them to a Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) championship and the Dudley Hewitt Cup.
His junior career continued as he was drafted by the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before being traded to the Kitchener Rangers. During his time in the OHL, Bortuzzo garnered attention from NHL scouts, drawing comparisons to notable players like Fedor Tyutin and earning a reputation as a legitimate prospect.
Bortuzzo's professional career took off when he was selected seventy-eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Over seven seasons with the Penguins organization, he made a significant impact, including being named to the 2011 AHL All-Star Game. His career took a pivotal turn on March 2, 2015, when he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Ian Cole.
One of the highlights of Bortuzzo's career came during the 2018–19 season when he won the Stanley Cup with the Blues, marking a historic achievement as the first alumnus of the SIJHL to do so. In addition to his time with the Penguins and Blues, Bortuzzo has also played for the New York Islanders, further solidifying his presence in the NHL.
