Robert Coleman Richardson

Robert Coleman Richardson, born on June twenty-six, nineteen thirty-seven, in Washington D.C., was a distinguished American experimental physicist renowned for his groundbreaking research in sub-millikelvin temperature studies of helium-3. His work significantly advanced the understanding of superfluidity, a phenomenon he discovered alongside senior researchers David Lee and graduate student Douglas Osheroff at Cornell University in the early nineteen seventies.

Richardson's academic journey began at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, where he found the biology and physics courses to be quite traditional for the era. Reflecting on his education, he noted that the concept of 'advanced placement' was not yet established, and he embarked on his first calculus course only as a sophomore in college.

He pursued higher education at Virginia Tech, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in nineteen fifty-eight, followed by a Master of Science in nineteen sixty. His academic excellence culminated in a PhD from Duke University in nineteen sixty-five, laying the foundation for his illustrious career in physics.
