Robert Helpmann

Robert Helpmann, born on April ninth, nineteen oh nine, was a multifaceted Australian artist renowned for his contributions as a ballet dancer, actor, choreographer, and director. His artistic journey began in Australia, but in nineteen thirty-two, he made a significant move to Britain, where he joined the Vic-Wells Ballet, now known as The Royal Ballet, under the visionary Ninette de Valois. Helpmann quickly rose to prominence as one of the company's leading men, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Alicia Markova and Margot Fonteyn.

During the Second World War, when Frederick Ashton, the chief choreographer of the company, was called to military service, Helpmann stepped into the role while maintaining his position as a principal dancer. His career was not limited to dance; from the outset, he embraced acting, particularly in the 1940s, when he became increasingly involved in theatrical productions at the Old Vic and in the West End. His repertoire included numerous Shakespearean roles, alongside works by playwrights like Shaw, Coward, and Sartre.

In nineteen sixty-five, Helpmann took on the role of co-director of the Australian Ballet, where he created several new ballets that showcased his innovative vision. He became the sole director in nineteen seventy-five, but his tenure was cut short due to disagreements with the company's board. Despite this setback, he continued to direct for the Australian Opera and performed in stage plays well into the 1980s.

Although primarily celebrated for his stage work, Helpmann's film career spanned from nineteen forty-two to nineteen eighty-four, during which he appeared in fifteen films, including notable titles such as The Red Shoes and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, where he portrayed the iconic Child Catcher. Helpmann passed away in Sydney, receiving a state funeral at St Andrew's Cathedral, a testament to his impact on the arts. The Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, honored him with a tribute in the Parliament of Australia, and the Helpmann Awards were established in two thousand one to commemorate his legacy in Australian performing arts.
