Robert I, also known as Robert of Courtenay, was born in the year twelve hundred and one and ascended to the title of Latin Emperor of Constantinople in the year twelve twenty-one. He was the younger son of Peter II of Courtenay and Yolanda of Flanders. Following the death of his mother in twelve nineteen, Robert's elder brother, Philip, Marquis of Namur, renounced his claim to the Latin Empire, paving the way for Robert to claim his inheritance.
Before taking possession of his new realm, Robert spent time in Hungary from autumn twelve twenty to early twelve twenty-one, where he was welcomed by his brother-in-law, Andrew II of Hungary. During this period, he forged a political alliance with Andrew against Theodore Komnenos Doukas, the Despot of Epirus. Their collaboration included the mediation of a marriage between Tsar Ivan Asen II and Andrew's daughter, Anna Maria, further solidifying their alliance.
Upon his coronation on March twenty-five, twelve twenty-one, Robert faced immediate challenges, including the loss of Thessalonica in twelve twenty-four to Theodore Doukas of Epirus. In response to the precarious situation of the Latin Empire, Pope Honorius III called for a crusade to defend Thessalonica, but the response was lackluster. That same year, Robert suffered another defeat at the Battle of Poimanenos against John III Doukas Vatatzes, the emperor of Nicaea.
In the aftermath of these defeats, Robert was compelled to negotiate peace with John III, who retained all his conquests. Robert had previously been betrothed to Eudokia, the daughter of the late emperor of Nicaea, but the engagement was complicated by familial ties and religious objections. Ultimately, Robert repudiated this engagement and married the Lady of Neuville, who was already promised to another. This decision led to conflict, and Robert was eventually driven from Constantinople by a Burgundian gentleman. Seeking redress, he fled to Rome, where the pope urged him to return. Tragically, Robert's life came to an end in early twelve twenty-eight in Morea during his return journey.
