Robert Koldewey

Robert Koldewey, born on September tenth, eighteen fifty-five, in Blankenburg am Harz, Germany, was a distinguished archaeologist and architectural historian. His remarkable career was marked by his extensive excavations of the ancient city of Babylon, located in present-day Iraq. Koldewey's work not only unearthed significant historical structures but also contributed to the advancement of archaeological methodologies.

Among his most notable discoveries were the foundations of the ziggurat of Marduk and the iconic Ishtar Gate. His innovative techniques, particularly in identifying and excavating mud brick architecture, were instrumental during his excavations of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon from eighteen ninety-nine to nineteen seventeen. These gardens, believed to have been constructed around five hundred eighty BC, showcased the use of unfired mudbricks, a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time.

Throughout his life, Koldewey actively participated in and led numerous archaeological digs across Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the field. His dedication to archaeology and architectural history left a lasting legacy, culminating in the establishment of the Koldewey Society after his passing in Berlin at the age of sixty-nine.
