From nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen ninety-three, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the Université de Montréal. His leadership continued as he served as the Rector of the university from nineteen ninety-eight until two thousand five, shaping the academic landscape of the institution.

In two thousand five, Lacroix was one of the twelve signatories of the political manifesto Pour un Québec lucide, reflecting his engagement in public discourse.
