Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson, born on November thirteenth, eighteen fifty, was a prolific Scottish writer whose talents spanned poetry, essays, novels, and children's literature. He is perhaps best remembered for his iconic works, including the adventurous tales of Treasure Island, the psychological thriller Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and the captivating Kidnapped. His poetry collection, A Child's Garden of Verses, remains a cherished classic in children's literature.

Stevenson's early life in Edinburgh was marked by serious bronchial issues, yet he defied his health challenges to produce a remarkable body of work and travel extensively. In his youth, he mingled with prominent literary figures in London, drawing inspiration and encouragement from the likes of Sidney Colvin, Andrew Lang, and W. E. Henley, the latter of whom is believed to have influenced the character of Long John Silver in Treasure Island.

In eighteen ninety, Stevenson made the significant decision to settle in Samoa. There, he became increasingly concerned about the growing European and American presence in the South Sea islands, which prompted a shift in his writing style from romantic adventure to a more somber realism. His life came to an untimely end in eighteen ninety-four when he suffered a stroke at the age of forty-four.

During his lifetime, Stevenson enjoyed celebrity status, and while his critical acclaim has seen fluctuations since his passing, his works are now celebrated worldwide. In two thousand eighteen, he was recognized as the twenty-sixth most translated author globally, just behind the legendary Charles Dickens.
