Robert Moog

Robert Moog, born on May 23, 1934, was an American engineer and a pioneering figure in electronic music. He is best known as the founder of Moog Music and the inventor of the first commercial synthesizer, the Moog synthesizer, which made its debut in 1964. His innovative spirit led to the creation of the Minimoog in 1970, a portable model that has been hailed as the most famous and influential synthesizer in history.

Moog's journey into the world of electronic music began in 1963 when he started designing and selling theremins while pursuing a PhD in engineering physics at Cornell University. His synthesizer was developed in response to the growing demand for practical and affordable electronic music equipment, driven by feedback from composers. Among his key innovations was the voltage-controlled oscillator, which allowed for pitch control through voltage, along with fundamental concepts such as modularity, envelope generation, and the pitch wheel.

Despite his groundbreaking contributions, Moog was known to be a poor businessman, holding only one patent for his transistor ladder filter design. Many believe that had he patented his other innovations, he could have amassed significant wealth. However, his decision to keep these innovations in the public domain ultimately fostered the growth of the synthesizer industry.

In 1971, Moog sold Moog Music to Norlin Musical Instruments, where he continued to work as a designer until 1977. He later founded Big Briar in 1978, which he renamed Moog Music in 2002 after reacquiring the rights to the name. In his later years, he taught at the University of North Carolina at Asheville while continuing to design instruments for the revived Moog Music. Robert Moog passed away at the age of seventy-one in Asheville due to a brain tumor.
