Robert Mueller

Robert Mueller, born on August 7, 1944, is a distinguished American lawyer and former military officer who made significant contributions to both the legal and governmental sectors. He served as the sixth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2001 to 2013, a tenure marked by his leadership during pivotal moments in U.S. history.

A graduate of Princeton University and New York University, Mueller's early career was defined by his service as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star for heroism and a Purple Heart. Following his military service, he pursued a legal education at the University of Virginia School of Law, which paved the way for a robust career in law and public service.

Throughout his career, Mueller has held various esteemed positions, including assistant United States attorney, United States attorney, and assistant attorney general for the Criminal Division. His role as a homicide prosecutor in Washington, D.C., and later as acting United States deputy attorney general showcased his commitment to justice. Notably, he was appointed and reappointed to Senate-confirmed positions by four U.S. presidents, reflecting his bipartisan respect and influence.

Mueller's directorship at the FBI is particularly notable; he is the only director since J. Edgar Hoover to serve beyond the statutory limit of ten years, thanks to a special two-year extension granted by Congress. In 2017, he was appointed as special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, culminating in a report submitted in March 2019.

After a distinguished career, Mueller resigned from his post on May 29, 2019, marking the end of a significant chapter in his public service journey.
