After the death of his father, he was raised in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Peary's academic journey began at Bowdoin College, after which he joined the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as a draftsman. His naval career commenced in eighteen eighty-one when he enlisted as a civil engineer.

Peary's first foray into the Arctic occurred in eighteen eighty-six, where he attempted to cross Greenland by dogsled, albeit unsuccessfully. His subsequent expedition to Greenland from eighteen ninety-one to eighteen ninety-two marked a significant achievement, as he reached Independence Fjord, confirming that Greenland was indeed an island. He was among the early Arctic explorers to study Inuit survival techniques, although his interactions with the indigenous population were controversial.

During an expedition in eighteen ninety-four, Peary became the first Western explorer to reach the Cape York meteorite, which had been vital for the Inuit in crafting tools. Unfortunately, he misled six indigenous individuals, including Minik Wallace, into accompanying him to the United States with false promises of returning with gifts and tools, a promise that went unfulfilled, leading to tragic consequences.
