Robert Pickton

Robert William Pickton, born on October 24, 1949, was a Canadian pig farmer whose life took a dark turn, leading him to become one of the most notorious serial killers in Canadian history. Known infamously as the Pig Farmer Killer or the Butcher, Pickton's heinous acts are believed to have claimed the lives of at least twenty-six women, many of whom were vulnerable sex workers from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

In a shocking confession to an undercover RCMP officer, Pickton admitted to forty-nine murders, although he was ultimately convicted in 2007 on six counts of second-degree murder. This conviction resulted in a life sentence without the possibility of parole for twenty-five years, which was the maximum penalty for second-degree murder under Canadian law at that time.

The legal proceedings surrounding Pickton's case were complex. In 2010, the Crown attorney decided to stay the remaining twenty murder charges, allowing for the release of previously undisclosed information, including a dropped attempted murder charge from 1997. Prosecutors concluded that pursuing additional charges was unnecessary since Pickton was already serving the longest sentence possible.

The revelation of Pickton's crimes ignited public outrage and brought attention to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. In response, the British Columbia provincial government established the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry to investigate the police's role in these tragic events. Pickton's life came to an end in 2024 when he was attacked by another inmate while serving his sentence in prison.
