Robert Van de Walle

Robert Van de Walle, born on May twentieth, nineteen fifty-four, is a distinguished retired Belgian judoka who made history by being the first athlete to compete in five Olympic Games, spanning from nineteen seventy-six to nineteen ninety-two. Competing in the half-heavyweight category, he achieved remarkable success, securing a gold medal in nineteen eighty and a bronze medal in nineteen eighty-eight at the age of thirty-four.

Throughout his illustrious career, Van de Walle showcased his exceptional talent by winning European titles in nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty-five, and nineteen eighty-six. Alongside fellow judoka Ingrid Berghmans, he became a prominent figure in Belgian judo during the late seventies and eighties, inspiring a generation of athletes.

After retiring from competitive judo, he transitioned into coaching, establishing a coaching company with his wife. His expertise and leadership were further recognized when he served as the head of the Belgian delegation at the two thousand four Summer Olympics, contributing to the development of judo in Belgium.

In the summer of twenty twenty-one, Van de Walle, who had achieved the rank of black belt eighth dan fourteen years prior, accepted his promotion to ninth dan from the International Judo Federation. He continues to be an active member of Judo Club Crossing Schaerbeek, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to the sport.
