Robin Hobb

Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden, born on March 5, 1952, is an acclaimed American writer known for her contributions to speculative fiction under the pen names Robin Hobb and Megan Lindholm. Hobb's most notable works include the fantasy series set in the Realm of the Elderlings, which encompasses the Farseer, Liveship Traders, and Tawny Man trilogies, as well as the Rain Wild Chronicles and the Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

Raised in California and later in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, Lindholm's early life was deeply influenced by the Alaskan wilderness and the ocean. At the age of eighteen, she married a mariner, and while balancing family life and work as a waitress, she began her writing career. Her first novel was published at the age of thirty, marking the beginning of a journey that would see her gain recognition with the 1986 urban fantasy novel Wizard of the Pigeons, which was praised for its unique portrayal of magic and poverty.

In 1995, seeking to redefine her career, Lindholm adopted the pen name Robin Hobb, under which she achieved significant commercial success with the Farseer trilogy. This series, characterized by its introspective and character-driven narrative, established Hobb as a leading figure in modern fantasy literature. Critics have lauded her work for its rich characterization and exploration of themes such as otherness, ecocentrism, queerness, and gender.

Hobb's literary contributions have been recognized globally, with her works translated into twenty-two languages and selling over four million copies by 2018. She concluded the Elderlings series in 2017 and was honored with the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2021, solidifying her legacy as one of the great modern fantasy writers.
