Robina Muqimyar

Robina Jalali, known professionally as Robina Muqimyar, was born on July third, nineteen eighty-six, in Kabul, Afghanistan. As a former Olympic athlete, she made history by representing her country at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, competing in the 100-meter sprint. Throughout her athletic career, she participated in thirty international events, showcasing her talent and determination on the global stage.

Muqimyar's journey to the Olympics was particularly significant as she was one of the first two women to represent Afghanistan, alongside judoka Friba Rezayee, at the Athens Summer Olympics in two thousand four. Her choice to compete while wearing the hijab drew international attention, symbolizing a powerful statement about women's rights and representation in sports.

Growing up as one of nine children in a family with seven girls and two boys, Robina faced numerous challenges. Her father, a businessman in the computer industry, now runs a non-profit organization that empowers Afghan women through sewing education. During the Taliban regime, when girls were forbidden from attending school, Robina was home-schooled. She later resumed her education after the fall of the Taliban in two thousand one, reflecting on her past with the words, 'There was nothing for us girls to do under the Taliban. You couldn't go to school. You couldn't play, you couldn't do anything. You were just at home all the time.'

In addition to her athletic achievements, Muqimyar has ventured into politics, running for a seat in the Wolesi Jirga, Afghanistan's lower house of parliament, under her family name, Jalali. Her dual career as a sprinter and politician highlights her commitment to advocating for women's rights and inspiring future generations.
