Rod Paige

Roderick Raynor Paige Sr., born on June 17, 1933, in Mississippi, was a distinguished American academic and politician who made history as the first African American to serve as the United States Secretary of Education. His tenure from 2001 to 2005 under President George W. Bush was marked by significant educational reforms, most notably the creation and passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002, which aimed to improve educational outcomes for all students.

Before his pivotal role in national education policy, Paige had a rich career in academia and athletics. He served as the head football coach for the Jackson State Tigers from 1964 to 1968 and later for the Texas Southern Tigers from 1971 to 1975. His leadership extended beyond sports; he was also a college dean at Texas Southern University and held the position of Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District from 1994 until 2001, where he implemented various initiatives to enhance educational quality.

After concluding his service in the Education Department, Paige continued to contribute to the academic community as the interim president of Jackson State University from November 2016 to June 2017. His legacy in education and leadership continues to inspire future generations.
