Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Rodrigo de Triana

Rodrigo de Triana, born Juan Rodríguez Bermejo in 1469, was a notable Spanish explorer, sailor, and navigator. He was the son of Vicente Bermejo, a potter and hidalgo, and Sereni Betancour. As a Marrano, Triana's heritage added a layer of complexity to his identity during a time of significant religious and cultural upheaval in Spain.

On October 12, 1492, while aboard Christopher Columbus' ship La Pinta, Triana made history by being the first European from the Age of Exploration to sight the Americas. At approximately two o'clock in the morning, he spotted land, which the natives called Guanahani, and famously exclaimed, "¡Tierra! ¡Tierra!" (Land! Land!). Columbus, who had claimed to see a light earlier, did not affirm it as land due to its indistinct nature.

Following this monumental discovery, the island was named San Salvador by Columbus, in honor of Jesus Christ and the salvation that the newfound land represented after their arduous journey. However, Triana was disillusioned by Columbus' questionable claims and the lack of recognition for his pivotal role in the discovery.

After returning to Spain, Triana continued his maritime pursuits, sailing to Africa. His legacy endures, not only through his contributions to exploration but also as the namesake of NASA's Deep Space Climate Observatory, originally named Triana in his honor.
