Roger Clemens

William Roger Clemens, born on August 4, 1962, is a celebrated American former professional baseball pitcher, renowned for his remarkable twenty-four seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). Nicknamed 'Rocket', Clemens is best known for his time with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, while also making significant contributions to the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros. His career statistics are nothing short of extraordinary, boasting three hundred fifty-four wins, a three point twelve earned run average (ERA), and four thousand six hundred seventy-two strikeouts, ranking him third all-time in MLB history.

Debuting in 1984 with the Red Sox, Clemens quickly established himself as a dominant force on the mound, anchoring the team's pitching staff for twelve years. His exceptional performance in 1986 earned him the American League (AL) Cy Young Award, the AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, and the All-Star Game MVP Award, alongside an MLB-record twenty strikeouts in a single game. After leaving Boston in 1996, he joined the Toronto Blue Jays, where he continued to excel, winning two more Cy Young Awards and achieving the pitching triple crown in both seasons.

In 1999, Clemens was traded to the Yankees, where he secured two World Series titles. His career milestones include becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to start a season with a win-loss record of twenty-one and reaching his three hundredth win and four thousandth strikeout in the same game in 2003. After a successful stint with the Houston Astros from 2004 to 2006, he returned to the Yankees for one final season before retiring, leaving behind a legacy as the only pitcher to surpass three hundred fifty wins and four thousand five hundred strikeouts.

Despite his illustrious career, Clemens faced significant controversy when the Mitchell Report alleged his use of anabolic steroids during his later years. He vehemently denied these accusations under oath before Congress, which led to a federal indictment on multiple felony counts. Although he was found not guilty of all charges in 2012, the allegations impacted his candidacy for the Baseball Hall of Fame, where he never received the required seventy-five percent of votes during his eligibility period, concluding with sixty-five point two percent in 2022. Nevertheless, many still regard Clemens as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
