Roger Cotes

Roger Cotes, born on July 10, 1682, was a distinguished English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. He is best remembered for his close collaboration with the eminent Isaac Newton, particularly in the proofreading of the second edition of Newton's groundbreaking work, the Principia. This pivotal role not only showcased Cotes' mathematical acumen but also solidified his place in the annals of scientific history.

In addition to his editorial contributions, Cotes made significant advancements in mathematical theory. He devised the Newton–Cotes formulas, a set of quadrature formulas that emerged from Newton's research. His innovative approach included a geometric argument that can be interpreted as a logarithmic version of Euler's formula, further demonstrating his prowess in the field.

Cotes held the prestigious position of the first Plumian Professor at Cambridge University from 1707 until his untimely death. His tenure at Cambridge was marked by a commitment to advancing mathematical knowledge and mentoring future generations of scholars.
