Rogério Sampaio

Rogério Sampaio, born on September twelfth, nineteen sixty-seven, is a distinguished Brazilian judoka who achieved Olympic glory by winning a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. His journey in judo began at the tender age of four, as his mother sought to instill discipline in her energetic son. This early start laid the foundation for a remarkable career in the sport.

Tragically, Sampaio dedicated his Olympic victory to his brother, Ricardo Cardoso, a fellow judoka who competed in the men's half-lightweight event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Ricardo's untimely death in nineteen ninety-one, following a personal crisis, deeply impacted Rogério and shaped his perspective on life and competition.

Following his Olympic success, Sampaio continued to excel, securing a bronze medal at the 1993 World Judo Championships. However, injuries plagued his career, preventing him from participating in both the 1995 Pan American Games and the 1996 Summer Olympics, where he served as a coach and commentator instead. He officially retired from international competition in nineteen ninety-eight.

In his post-competitive life, Sampaio has made significant contributions to the judo community. He operates a dojo in Santos, which has produced notable talents like Olympic medalist Leandro Guilheiro. Additionally, he took on the role of coach for the Brazilian women's judo team at the 2001 Universiade, alongside fellow Olympic champion Aurélio Miguel, who coached the men's team. Currently, he serves as the General Secretary of the National Antidoping Agency of Brazil, furthering his commitment to the sport.
