Rogneda of Polotsk

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Rogneda of Polotsk

Rogneda of Polotsk, also known by her Christian name Anastasia, was born around the year nine hundred sixty. She was a prominent figure in the history of Eastern Europe, recognized as a princess of Polotsk and the daughter of Rogvolod, a Scandinavian noble who established his rule in the region during the mid-tenth century.

Her life took a tragic turn when Vladimir the Great, a powerful ruler, killed her father and subsequently took Rogneda as one of his wives. This act of violence marked a significant moment in the chronicles of the time, illustrating the brutal realities of power struggles in the region.

Interestingly, the Suzdalian Chronicle presents a different narrative, referring to Rogvolod's daughter as Gorislava. In this account, Vladimir's actions are depicted as even more heinous, as he is said to have raped her in front of her parents before murdering her father. Gorislava's story diverges further, as she seeks revenge against Vladimir, showcasing the complexities of these historical accounts.
