Roman Totenberg

Roman Totenberg, born on January first, nineteen eleven, was a distinguished Polish-American violinist and music educator. A child prodigy, he showcased his extraordinary talent in various cultural hubs including Poland, Moscow, Berlin, and Paris before making the pivotal decision to immigrate to the United States in nineteen thirty-eight at the age of twenty-seven.

Throughout his illustrious career, Totenberg performed and taught both nationally and internationally, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music education. His passion for the violin was evident in his teaching methods and performances, inspiring countless students and audiences alike.

One of Totenberg's most cherished instruments was the Ames Stradivarius, a remarkable violin that was unfortunately stolen from his office at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, following a concert in May nineteen eighty. The theft was a significant loss, but the instrument was ultimately recovered and returned to Totenberg's daughters on August sixth, two thousand fifteen, bringing closure to a long and emotional chapter in their lives.
