Ron Busniuk, born on August 13, 1948, was a notable Canadian professional ice hockey player whose career spanned both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA). He made his NHL debut with the Buffalo Sabres, appearing in six games during the 1973 and 1974 seasons. Following his time in the NHL, Busniuk transitioned to the WHA, where he played four full seasons with teams including the Minnesota Fighting Saints, New England Whalers, and Edmonton Oilers from 1974 to 1978.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Busniuk showcased his talent at the collegiate level, playing for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. His exceptional performance earned him All-American honors during his senior year, highlighting his skills on the ice. After college, he continued to develop his career in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs and the Cincinnati Swords, where he was recognized as a member of the AHL First All-Star Team.
After hanging up his skates, Busniuk transitioned into coaching, where he found success leading the Thunder Bay Twins Senior Hockey Team to two consecutive championships in the 1980s. His contributions to the sport were later honored with inductions into both the Northern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Minnesota Duluth Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ron Busniuk was not only a talented player but also the older brother of Mike Busniuk, who also made his mark in the NHL. Sadly, Ron Busniuk passed away in Thunder Bay on March 8, 2024, at the age of seventy-five, leaving behind a legacy in the world of ice hockey.
