Ron Dellums

Ron Dellums, born on November twenty-fourth, nineteen thirty-five, was a prominent American politician whose career spanned several decades. He made history as the first African American elected to Congress from Northern California and was known for his progressive stance as an openly socialist candidate. His political journey began after serving in the United States Marine Corps and later on the Berkeley City Council, where he laid the groundwork for his impactful career.

From nineteen seventy-one to nineteen ninety-eight, Dellums represented California's ninth congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving an impressive thirteen terms. His tenure was marked by significant opposition to military projects, including the MX Missile and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber program. Dellums's commitment to social justice and anti-apartheid efforts culminated in the passage of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of nineteen eighty-six, which famously overcame a presidential veto.

After his congressional career, Dellums transitioned to lobbying in Washington, D.C., where he continued to advocate for progressive causes. In two thousand seven, he returned to local politics, serving as the Mayor of Oakland until two thousand eleven.
