Ron Freeman

Ron Freeman, born on June twelfth, nineteen forty-seven, is a distinguished American former athlete renowned for his remarkable achievements in track and field. He gained international fame during the 1968 Summer Olympics, where he showcased his exceptional talent by winning a gold medal in the 4 × 400 meter relay and securing a bronze medal in the 400 meters. Freeman's performance in the relay was particularly noteworthy; he ran the second leg of the American team, which not only clinched the gold but also set a new world record with a time of two minutes fifty-six seconds and sixteen milliseconds.

Freeman's relay leg time of forty-three point two seconds remains legendary, as it was the fastest ever recorded for a 4 × 400 meter relay leg and stood unchallenged for over twenty-five years. His athletic prowess was evident early on, as he finished second to Adrian Metcalfe in the 440 yards event at the British 1963 AAA Championships, further establishing his reputation as a formidable competitor.

Raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Freeman attended Thomas Jefferson High School before continuing his education and athletic career at Arizona State University. His time at Arizona State was marked by significant achievements, although he is sometimes confused with another athlete of the same name, Ron Freeman, born in nineteen forty, who also excelled in the 400 meters and set an earlier world record in the mile relay.

Despite the mix-up, Ron Freeman III, born seven years later in New Jersey, also made his mark as an All-American for the Sun Devils in nineteen sixty-eight. It is important to note that these athletes, while sharing a name and a passion for track and field, are not related.
