Ron Johnson, born on April 8, 1955, is a prominent American businessman and politician who has served as the senior United States senator from Wisconsin since 2011. A member of the Republican Party, Johnson first entered the political arena in 2010, successfully defeating the Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold. He was reelected in 2016, again besting Feingold in a rematch, and secured his third term in 2022 by narrowly defeating Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes.
Before his political career, Johnson was the chief executive officer of a plastics manufacturing company based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. His foray into politics was largely motivated by his opposition to the Affordable Care Act, and he credits the Tea Party movement for his rise, although he does not personally align himself with it. As a freshman senator, he quickly gained a reputation for his staunch opposition to government spending and his advocacy for a balanced budget, often voting against budget proposals from both major parties.
Throughout his tenure, Johnson has been known for promoting various political conspiracy theories, including those related to the Biden-Ukraine situation and election denial. He has also expressed skepticism about the scientific consensus on climate change and has called for the partial privatization of Social Security. His political stance includes advocating for alternative medicine and supporting stronger measures against crime and illegal immigration.
In his second term, Johnson aligned himself closely with Donald Trump, using his role as chair of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs to investigate figures such as Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden. His involvement in Ukraine–United States relations has been notable, particularly during the Trump–Ukraine scandal, where he emerged as a key witness. In his ongoing efforts, Johnson has focused on investigating alleged corruption within federal agencies, claiming they are undermining the Trump administration.
