Roque Sáenz Peña

Roque Sáenz Peña, born on March nineteenth, eighteen fifty-one, was a prominent Argentine lawyer and politician who ascended to the presidency of Argentina on October twelfth, nineteen ten. He held this esteemed position until his untimely death in office on August ninth, nineteen fourteen. As the son of former president Luis Sáenz-Peña, he was deeply entrenched in the political landscape of Argentina.

Throughout his political career, Sáenz Peña was a key figure within the National Autonomist Party, advocating for a modernist approach that sought to reform the existing political system. His most significant achievement came with the passage of Law eight thousand eight hundred seventy-one, commonly referred to as the 'Sáenz-Peña Law'. This landmark legislation revolutionized the Argentine electoral system by instituting secret, universal, and compulsory voting for males over the age of eighteen.

The Sáenz-Peña Law played a crucial role in dismantling the long-standing electoral fraud perpetrated by the conservative oligarchy known as the Generation of '80. This reform not only marked a turning point in Argentine politics but also laid the groundwork for the emergence of the Radical Civic Union during the first truly free elections in the country.
