Roque Santa Cruz

Roque Santa Cruz, born on August 16, 1981, is a distinguished Paraguayan professional footballer renowned for his prowess as a striker. Currently playing for Nacional in the Paraguayan Primera División, he holds the record as the all-time leading goal scorer for the national team, having earned over one hundred caps. His remarkable career spans four decades, during which he has consistently found the back of the net at a professional level.

Santa Cruz began his football journey with Olimpia, where he advanced through the youth ranks to make his first-team debut at just fifteen years old in 1997. Over his tenure with the club, he netted thirteen goals in twenty-four appearances, contributing to Olimpia's triumphs in the Primera División titles of 1997, 1998, and 1999. His international career took off when he scored three goals in four matches at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, followed by his debut for the Paraguay national team at the 1999 Copa América, where he again scored three goals in four appearances.

In August 1999, Santa Cruz made a significant move to Bayern Munich for a transfer fee of five million euros, marking the highest transfer fee in Paraguayan football until 2019. During his time with Bayern, he faced challenges due to injuries and competition from notable teammates, yet he was part of a successful squad that clinched multiple Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and DFB-Ligapokal titles, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League in 2001.

After leaving Bayern in July 2007 for Blackburn Rovers, where he scored nineteen goals in the 2007-08 Premier League season, he joined Manchester City in June 2009 for a fee of seventeen and a half million pounds. His time at City included loan spells at Blackburn and Real Betis. Santa Cruz represented Paraguay in three FIFA World Cups and several Copa América tournaments, notably finishing as runners-up in 2011. Although he initially retired from international football in 2016, he made a comeback in May 2019, reaffirming his commitment to the national team.
