Rory Delap

Rory Delap, born on July 6, 1976, in England, is a former professional footballer who made his mark as a midfielder. He represented the Republic of Ireland national team, earning eleven caps during his international career. Delap's football journey began at Carlisle United, where his impressive performances caught the attention of Derby County, leading to a transfer in 1998.

In 2001, Delap made a significant move to Southampton for a club record fee of four million pounds. After five successful years on the south coast, he transitioned to Sunderland. However, his time at Sunderland was brief, as he was loaned to Stoke City in October 2006. In a twist of fate, Delap suffered a broken leg in just his second match against Sunderland, yet he persevered and signed a permanent contract with Stoke in January 2007.

Delap quickly became an integral part of the Stoke City squad, renowned for his exceptional long throw-in ability, which played a crucial role in the team's promotion to the Premier League and their subsequent stability in the league. After six seasons with Stoke, he had short stints at Barnsley and Burton Albion before retiring in December 2013. His fitness and work rate on the pitch were notable, and he was even a talented javelin thrower in his youth, with aspirations of representing Ireland in the Olympics.

Following his retirement from playing, Delap returned to Derby County to embark on a coaching career. He initially took charge of the under-18 team before stepping up to become the under-21 head coach in February 2016. In his first season, he led the team to victory in the U21 Premier League 1 Division 2 title, marking a successful start to his coaching journey.
