Rosa Bonheur

Rosa Bonheur, born on March sixteenth, eighteen hundred twenty-two, was a renowned French artist celebrated for her exceptional talent in painting animals, a genre known as animalière. Her artistic prowess extended beyond painting; she also created sculptures that embodied a realist style, showcasing her versatility and dedication to her craft.

Among her most notable works is 'Ploughing in the Nivernais,' which first graced the Salon in eighteen hundred forty-nine and is now housed in the prestigious Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Another significant piece, 'The Horse Fair' (or 'Le marché aux chevaux'), was exhibited at the Salon of eighteen hundred fifty-three and completed in eighteen hundred fifty-five, currently residing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Bonheur's legacy as the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century is well established, and her life was as intriguing as her art. She shared a long-term partnership with Nathalie Micas, living together for over forty years until Micas's passing. Following this, Bonheur resided with American painter Anna Elizabeth Klumpke, although the nature of these relationships has sparked speculation regarding her sexuality.
