Roshanara Begum

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Roshanara Begum

Roshanara Begum, born on September third, sixteen seventeen, was a prominent Mughal princess and poet, known for her literary contributions and political influence. As the third daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, she played a significant role in the Mughal dynasty's tumultuous history.

During the war of succession that erupted following her father's illness in sixteen fifty-seven, Roshanara aligned herself with her younger brother, Aurangzeb. Her support proved pivotal, and upon Aurangzeb's ascension to the throne in sixteen fifty-eight, she was bestowed the title of Padshah Begum, effectively making her the First Lady of the Mughal Empire and a formidable political figure.

However, the dynamics of power shifted after the death of Shah Jahan, as her sister Jahanara Begum managed to reclaim the title of Padshah Begum, sidelining Roshanara in the process. Despite this setback, Roshanara's legacy endures, particularly through the Roshanara Bagh, a beautiful pleasure garden located in present-day north Delhi.

Today, the Roshanara Club, established in the late nineteenth century by the British, stands as a testament to her influence, originally being part of the Roshanara Bagh. Though her political power waned towards the end of her life, Roshanara Begum remains a significant figure in Mughal history, celebrated for her contributions to poetry and the arts.
