Ross Ulbricht, born on March twenty-seventh, nineteen eighty-four, is an American computer scientist, hacker, visual artist, and motivational speaker. He is best known for creating and operating Silk Road, the first modern darknet market, which he managed from two thousand eleven until his arrest in two thousand thirteen. Operating under the pseudonym 'Dread Pirate Roberts,' a nod to the character from The Princess Bride, Ulbricht facilitated the anonymous trade of narcotics and other illegal products using bitcoin on the Tor network.
In October two thousand thirteen, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) apprehended Ulbricht and subsequently took Silk Road offline. His trial in two thousand fifteen resulted in a conviction for engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, distributing narcotics via the internet, conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identity documents, and conspiracy to commit computer hacking. The court sentenced him to two life sentences plus forty years without the possibility of parole, to be served concurrently.
Ulbricht's lengthy sentence sparked outrage among members of the Libertarian Party and the 'Free Ross' movement, who deemed it excessive. His appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in two thousand seventeen and the U.S. Supreme Court in two thousand eighteen were unsuccessful. However, after serving twelve years, Ulbricht was granted a full and unconditional pardon by U.S. President Donald Trump in January two thousand twenty-five, marking a significant turn in his life.
