In academia, Gay holds the prestigious position of the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University. Her career in education began as an assistant professor at Eastern Illinois University, where she taught for four years before moving to Purdue University as an associate professor of English, achieving tenure.
