He gained prominence through his work with influential bands such as Christian Death, Shadow Project, and the industrial project Premature Ejaculation. Christian Death is often recognized as a pioneer of the American gothic rock and deathrock scenes, solidifying Williams' status as a significant figure in the music world.

Despite his association with the gothic label, Williams sought to redefine his artistic identity throughout the eighties and nineties. He shifted his focus towards punk rock, hard rock, cabaret, and spoken word music, distancing himself from the confines of the goth genre. His creative endeavors extended beyond music, as he was also an accomplished painter, poet, and collage artist, showcasing his diverse talents.

In addition to his work with Christian Death, Williams was involved in various musical projects, including Daucus Karota, Heltir, EXP, Bloodflag, and his own version of Christian Death, known as Christian Death featuring Rozz Williams.
