Rudi Glöckner

Rudi Glöckner, born on March twentieth, nineteen twenty-nine, made history as the first German referee to officiate a FIFA World Cup final. His remarkable achievement came during the 1970 World Cup held in Mexico City, where he took charge of the iconic match between Brazil and Italy.

Hailing from what was then East Germany, Glöckner's international career spanned several prestigious tournaments. He showcased his officiating skills at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and was also present at the 1976 European Championship, further solidifying his reputation on the global stage.

In addition to his Olympic appearances, Glöckner refereed notable club matches, including a significant encounter between Den Haag and West Ham United in the 1975–76 European Cup Winners' Cup. His tenure as a referee was not without its challenges; during a match between Wales and Yugoslavia at Ninian Park in Cardiff in 1976, he required the protection of sixteen police officers due to the intense reactions from Welsh fans regarding his decisions.

Throughout his illustrious career, Glöckner officiated a total of four matches at two Olympic Games and four matches at two World Cups, leaving an indelible mark on the sport of football.
