Rudolf von Laban

Rudolf von Laban, born on December fifteenth, eighteen seventy-nine, was a prominent Austro-Hungarian choreographer, dancer, and movement theorist. Renowned as a founding father of expressionist dance, he played a pivotal role in the evolution of modern dance. His innovative contributions included Laban movement analysis, a systematic approach to documenting human movement, and Labanotation, a groundbreaking movement notation system that significantly influenced dance notation and analysis.

Throughout his career, Laban sought to extend his theories beyond dance, exploring their applications in architecture, education, industry, and management. His work in theatrical movement has left a lasting impact, and he is also credited with initiating one of the primary approaches to dance therapy.

In the late nineteen thirties, Laban's relationship with the National Socialist government soured after Joseph Goebbels canceled his last choral work, Of the Warm Wind and New Joy, which was intended for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. This led to his departure from Germany in nineteen thirty-seven, after four years of collaboration with the regime.

After relocating to England, Laban, alongside his long-time collaborator and former student Lisa Ullmann, established the Laban Art of Movement Guild in London and the Art of Movement Studio in Manchester between nineteen forty-five and nineteen forty-six. He continued to work in these institutions until his passing on July first, nineteen fifty-eight. The legacy of his work is preserved today at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.
