Ruth Moody

Ruth Moody, a talented Canadian soprano singer-songwriter, was born on December twenty-eighth, nineteen seventy-five, in Australia. She spent her formative years in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where she was raised in a musical family by her parents, Charles and Marcelline, alongside her siblings Richard, Jane, and Rachel. Moody's musical journey began at the tender age of four with classical training, but she soon gravitated towards vocal performance, setting aside string instruments in favor of her voice.

Initially pursuing a degree in English and French literature with aspirations of becoming a teacher, Moody's path took a significant turn in nineteen ninety-six when she decided to immerse herself in the world of folk music. Her first major musical endeavor was with the Juno-nominated roots band Scruj MacDuhk, where she served as the lead singer from nineteen ninety-seven until the band's dissolution in two thousand one. This pivotal experience allowed her to hone her songwriting skills and expand her musical repertoire to include guitar, piano, bodhran, accordion, and banjo.

In two thousand two, Moody joined forces with Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft to form the acclaimed folk trio, the Wailin' Jennys. The group has since garnered international recognition and numerous accolades, including Juno awards for their albums '40 Days' and 'Bright Morning Stars.' Alongside her work with the Jennys, Moody has released four full-length albums and an EP, as well as a collaborative album titled 'South Bound' with former bandmates Jeremy Penner and Oliver Swain.

Moody's solo career took off with the release of her EP 'Blue Muse' in July two thousand two, followed by her critically acclaimed debut solo album 'The Garden' in April two thousand ten. This album earned her nominations for a Juno award, a Western Canadian Music Award, and three Canadian Folk Music Awards. In two thousand thirteen, she released 'These Wilder Things,' featuring contributions from renowned guitarist Mark Knopfler. Her collaboration with Knopfler continued with the duet 'Wherever I Go,' which appeared on his two thousand fifteen album 'Tracker.'

Throughout her career, Moody has received accolades for her songwriting, including first prize in the International Songwriting Competition for her song 'Storm Comin' in April two thousand twelve. She was also honored as the English Songwriter of the Year at the twentieth Canadian Folk Music Awards for her album 'Wanderer.' Since then, she has been actively touring worldwide, both as a solo artist and with the Wailin' Jennys, captivating audiences with her enchanting voice and heartfelt compositions.
