Ruth Pfau

Ruth Pfau, a remarkable German–Pakistani Catholic Christian religious sister and physician, dedicated her life to the fight against leprosy in Pakistan. Born on September ninth, nineteen twenty-nine, she emigrated from Germany in nineteen sixty-one, becoming a member of the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. Her unwavering commitment to humanitarian work spanned over fifty-five years, during which she made a profound impact on countless lives.

Throughout her illustrious career, Pfau established one hundred fifty-seven leprosy clinics across Pakistan, providing treatment to more than fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty individuals afflicted by the disease. Her tireless efforts not only alleviated suffering but also raised awareness about leprosy, transforming public perception and fostering compassion for those affected.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Pfau received numerous prestigious awards, including the Hilal-e-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, and the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam. Her legacy continues to live on through institutions named in her honor, such as the Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College and the Dr. Ruth Pfau Hospital in Karachi.

Ruth Pfau passed away in August twenty seventeen, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and dedication. She was laid to rest with full state honors, a testament to the profound impact she had on the nation and the lives she touched.
