Ruth St. Denis

Ruth St. Denis, born Ruth Dennis on January 20, 1879, was a groundbreaking figure in the world of modern dance. Her innovative approach introduced Eastern philosophies into the art form, significantly influencing the trajectory of dance and paving the way for future generations of female dancers.

In 1915, St. Denis co-founded the American Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, a pivotal institution that nurtured the talents of many notable performers, including Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey. Her teachings emphasized the connection between movement and spirituality, a theme she explored in her published articles on spiritual dance and the mysticism of the body.
