Rutherford B. Hayes, born on October fourth, eighteen hundred twenty-two, was a prominent lawyer, military officer, and statesperson who served as the nineteenth president of the United States from eighteen seventy-seven to eighteen eighty-one. Before his presidency, he was Cincinnati's city solicitor from eighteen fifty-eight to eighteen sixty-one, where he gained recognition as a staunch abolitionist, defending refugee slaves in court.

At the onset of the Civil War, Hayes abandoned his budding political career to join the Union army, where he demonstrated remarkable bravery, sustaining five wounds, most notably at the Battle of South Mountain in eighteen sixty-two.
