Rutilio Grande, born on July fifth, nineteen twenty-eight, was a dedicated Catholic priest whose life was marked by a profound commitment to social justice and the welfare of the marginalized in El Salvador.
As a Jesuit priest, Grande became a prominent figure in the fight against oppression, advocating for the rights of the poor. His close friendship with Archbishop Óscar Romero highlighted his influence and the shared vision for a more equitable society.
Tragically, Grande's life was cut short when he was assassinated in nineteen seventy-seven by Salvadoran security forces. His death occurred just before the onset of the Salvadoran Civil War, making him the first priest to be killed in this turbulent period.
In recognition of his sacrifice and commitment to his faith, Pope Francis approved Grande's beatification as a martyr on February twenty-first, two thousand twenty. The ceremony took place in San Salvador on January twenty-second, two thousand twenty-two, honoring his legacy and the impact he had on the Church and society.
