Rutilius Claudius Namatianus, born in the year four hundred, was a distinguished Roman Imperial poet, politician, and writer. He is best remembered for his Latin poem, De reditu suo, which is celebrated for its elegant elegiac metre. This work narrates a coastal voyage from Rome to Gaul, taking place in the year four hundred and seventeen. Although the poem originally spanned two books, much of it has been lost to time, leaving approximately seven hundred lines that continue to captivate readers.

The question of Rutilius's religious beliefs has sparked considerable scholarly debate. While some have speculated about his potential conversion to Christianity, the consensus among early twenty-first-century editors of his work is that he likely did not embrace the faith. Alan Cameron, a prominent scholar of Late Antiquity, suggests that Rutilius probably maintained his allegiance to Rome's traditional religious practices.
