Ruzi Ying

Ruzi Ying, known in Chinese as 孺子嬰 (Rúzi Yīng), was born in the year five CE and is remembered as the last monarch of the Western Han dynasty. His personal name was Liu Ying (劉嬰), and he held the title of crown prince from six CE until nine CE, despite never officially ascending to the throne. His rise to prominence came after the untimely deaths of Emperor Ai and Emperor Ping, both of whom left no heirs. In a bid to consolidate power, Wang Mang selected the young Ying as a figurehead.

However, Ruzi Ying's reign was short-lived. Wang Mang quickly deposed him, establishing the Xin dynasty in place of the Han. During this tumultuous period, Ying was effectively placed under house arrest, leading to a life of isolation that left him unaware of even the most basic aspects of the world around him, including the names of common animals.

Following the fall of the Xin dynasty in twenty-three CE, various individuals emerged, claiming to restore the Han dynasty. In twenty-five CE, a rebellion against the Gengshi Emperor sought to use Liu Ying as a symbol of the Han legacy. Tragically, when the rebellion was quelled, Ruzi Ying lost his life, marking the end of an era for the Han dynasty.

Ruzi Ying is often viewed as a tragic figure, an innocent child caught in the web of political machinations and power struggles. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities of youth in the face of overwhelming historical forces.
