In the two thousand nine to two thousand ten season, Johansen transitioned to the major junior level, joining the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. His impressive performance during his first season caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to his selection as the fourth overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the two thousand ten NHL entry draft.

Johansen spent five seasons with the Blue Jackets, showcasing his talent and determination on the ice. In January two thousand sixteen, he was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Seth Jones. During his tenure with Nashville, he played a pivotal role in the team's success, contributing to seven consecutive postseason appearances, including a memorable run to the Stanley Cup Finals in two thousand seventeen.
