Ryan Shawcross, born on October 4, 1987, is an English former professional footballer who made his mark as a centre-back. Currently, he serves as the first-team coach at Stoke City, a club where he spent a significant portion of his playing career.
Shawcross began his football journey with Manchester United, making his debut in the League Cup against Crewe Alexandra. His early career included a loan spell at Royal Antwerp, a Belgian feeder club, before he joined Stoke City on loan in August 2007. He quickly made an impact, scoring on his debut against Cardiff City, which led to Stoke securing his permanent transfer for a fee of one million pounds in January 2008.
During his time at Stoke, Shawcross developed a formidable defensive partnership with Leon Cort, helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League after a 23-year absence. Despite a rocky start in the top flight, he established himself as a first-choice centre-back alongside Abdoulaye Faye. Under manager Tony Pulis, Shawcross was appointed captain ahead of the 2010–11 season, leading the team to the FA Cup Final in 2011, where they finished as runners-up to Manchester City.
Shawcross continued to excel, contributing to Stoke's participation in the UEFA Europa League in the 2011–12 season. He remained a key player under both Pulis and Mark Hughes, earning the player of the year award in the 2013–14 season. After making 453 appearances over a remarkable fourteen-year tenure with Stoke, he concluded his playing career with Inter Miami, retiring in January 2022 to embark on a coaching career.
