Ryuichi Sakamoto, born on January 17, 1952, was a multifaceted Japanese musician and composer whose influence spanned various genres and mediums. He was not only a talented pianist and keyboardist but also a record producer, music arranger, and actor. Sakamoto's career took off in the mid-1970s when he began working as a session musician while studying at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
In 1978, he co-founded the pioneering synth-based band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) alongside Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. This collaboration significantly shaped the landscape of electronic music. Concurrently, Sakamoto launched his solo career, releasing the groundbreaking album Thousand Knives and the influential B-2 Unit, which featured the iconic track 'Riot in Lagos'. His work in this era laid the groundwork for the evolution of electro, hip hop, and dance music.
Sakamoto's talents extended beyond music production; he made a remarkable debut as an actor and film score composer with the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in 1983. The film's main theme, 'Forbidden Colours', became an international sensation. His most notable achievement as a film composer came with The Last Emperor in 1987, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score, marking a historic moment as the first Japanese composer to receive this honor.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sakamoto composed music for various films, including The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha, and The Revenant, earning numerous accolades such as a BAFTA, Grammy, and two Golden Globe Awards. He also contributed to the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games and created 'Energy Flow', the first instrumental number-one single in Japan's Oricon charts history. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2009.
