Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of S. N. Goenka

S. N. Goenka, born on January thirtieth, nineteen twenty-four, was a prominent Indian teacher of vipassanā meditation. His journey began in Burma, where he was born into an Indian family. It was there that he learned the art of Vipassana from the esteemed Sayagyi U Ba Khin. In nineteen sixty-two, amidst the nationalization of businesses by the military government in Burma, Goenka made the pivotal decision to retire from his business career.

In nineteen sixty-nine, he relocated to India, driven by a passion to share the teachings of Vipassana meditation. Goenka's approach was distinctive; he emphasized a non-sectarian and scientific path to liberation, steering clear of rites and rituals. This universal appeal allowed his teachings to resonate with individuals from diverse religious backgrounds, as well as those who identified as non-religious, attracting a global audience.

As an influential figure in the realm of meditation, Goenka played a crucial role in establishing non-commercial Vipassana meditation centers worldwide. These centers offer a ten-day residential program where participants receive food, accommodation, and instruction at no cost, relying solely on voluntary donations from past meditators to sustain their operations.

In recognition of his significant contributions, S. N. Goenka was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in two thousand twelve, a prestigious award acknowledging distinguished service of high order.
