Sa'dun Hammadi

Sa'dun Hammadi, born on June 22, 1930, in Karbala, Iraq, emerged as a prominent figure in the political landscape of Iraq. Coming from a Shi'ite family, he pursued higher education in Beirut and the United States, where he earned a doctorate. His political journey began in the late 1940s when he joined the Ba'ath Party, playing a crucial role in introducing Ba'athism to Iraq. Following the party's rise to power in 1968, Hammadi held various significant positions, including Minister for Agrarian Reform and head of the Iraq National Oil Company.

Hammadi's tenure as Minister of Oil was marked by the nationalization of oil in 1972, a pivotal moment in Iraq's economic history. In 1974, he ascended to the role of Foreign Minister, a position he maintained until 1983, navigating the complexities of international relations during a tumultuous period. His ability to survive the political upheaval following Saddam Hussein's rise to power in 1979 showcased his political acumen. Hammadi represented Iraq on numerous state visits and attended various summits alongside Saddam.

In March 1991, Hammadi briefly served as Prime Minister, succeeding Saddam, but was ousted later that year due to his reformist views. He then became the Speaker of the National Assembly in 1996, a role he held until the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Notably, he rejected an ultimatum from U.S. President George W. Bush shortly before the war commenced. Following the invasion, Hammadi was detained by American forces for several months before relocating to Lebanon and eventually settling in Qatar, where he engaged in cultural and literary pursuits.

Hammadi's contributions to Iraqi politics and culture have left a lasting legacy. He is remembered as a respected Shi'ite figure within the Ba'ath Party and one of the most widely published leaders in Iraq's political history. His life came to an end on March 14, 2007, in Germany, at the age of seventy-six, with his funeral held in Qatar.
